Florence is often imagined as a city of things already completed.

A façade.
A chapel.
A square.
A name fixed in history.

But there are moments when the city does something else.

It listens.

​

Each summer, through the work of a Florentine association devoted to music, Florence becomes less a museum of finished forms and more a place of arrival. The association does not produce music in the conventional sense. It does not have a fixed sound to defend, or a repertoire to repeat. Instead, it creates the conditions for music to arrive.

 

And arrive it does.

From Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Taiwan, England, Hong Kong, Spain, Macao, Germany, Italy.

​

Young musicians come to Florence carrying their own discipline, their own language, their own way of waiting before the first note. They do not come simply to perform in the city, or to add another event to its summer calendar. They come to meet it.

And Florence receives them.

A loggia becomes a stage.
A square becomes an ear.
Stone, for a while, holds sound.

​

This is not only classical music, and not only performance. It is a temporary conversation between places: between those who have travelled and those who pause to listen; between the memory of Florence and the energy of younger hands; between the formal beauty of the city and the living uncertainty of music as it happens.

​

Nothing remains quite still.

​

A youth orchestra, a wind band, a choir, a saxophone ensemble, strings from across the world — each changes the air in its own way. For once, the city so often looked at is heard.

​

Perhaps that is the quiet value of the project.

​

Not to add more spectacle to Florence, but to let another kind of presence pass through it.
